Praise be to Allah SWT for His blessings and guidance, which have enabled the
completion of this book entitled English for Librarians. This book is designed as a
practical and academic resource for librarians, library science students, and all
individuals who are involved in library and information services and wish to improve
their English communication skills in professional contexts.
In the era of globalization and rapid technological advancement, libraries are no longer
limited to managing printed collections. Modern librarians are expected to
communicate effectively with diverse users, access international information sources,
participate in academic collaboration, and provide excellent services in both local and
global environments. Therefore, English proficiency has become an essential
competence for librarians in carrying out their professional duties.
This book has been systematically developed to meet the practical needs of librarians
and learners of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The materials presented in this
book cover various topics related to library activities, including library services,
cataloging, circulation, information literacy, digital libraries, professional
correspondence, and daily communication in library settings. In addition, this book
provides vocabulary enrichment, useful expressions, dialogues, reading passages, and
exercises that are relevant to real-life situations faced by librarians.
The authors have attempted to present the materials in a clear, academic, and reader
friendly manner so that learners can study independently or use this book in classroom
instruction and training programs. It is hoped that this book will not only improve
readers’ English skills but also enhance their confidence and professionalism in serving
library users.
The authors would like to express their sincere gratitude to all individuals and
institutions who have contributed to the completion of this book. Special appreciation
is extended to colleagues, students, and academic communities at UIN Mahmud Yunus
Batusangkar for their support, encouragement, and valuable insights during the writing
process.
Finally, the authors realize that this book is not perfect. Therefore, constructive
suggestions and feedback from readers are highly appreciated for future improvement.
May this book provide meaningful benefits for librarians, students, educators, and all
readers who are interested in developing English communication skills in the field of
library and information science.
